Wedding Bells at the Old Red Lion

Wedding season is in full swing, and we had the pleasure of hosting the wedding for the new Mr & Mrs Winter. They both grew up in Milton Keynes and it was important to the couple that they had a local reception venue so that their friends and family could easily attend.

The newlyweds originally met on social media. Valentine’s Day, 2015, was when everything changed. Sharing a love of travel, history and photography, they hit it off right away. 7 years later, the rest is history. 

The happy couple wanted an intimate wedding that was unique and untraditional. They were struggling to find a venue with a flexible package, so taking to Google, they searched ‘Milton Keynes pub venues’ and the Old Red Lion appeared. They popped in for a drink to check out the venue, and were instantly drawn to the amazing view from the garden; it was the perfect setting for their wedding.

In total, there were 60 guests – where they surprised everyone by getting married on the terrace! The wedding theme was outdoors and nature, which fit perfectly with the venue setting in a Buckinghamshire village. They brought in beautiful freshly cut flowers to decorate the tables, which looked absolutely magical and enabled the couple to add personal touches to their reception. Helen wore a gorgeous dress embroidered with flowers, whilst Chris wore a velvet tuxedo blazer. 

The bride’s mother arrived early to dress the tables with the pub front of house team, putting out special additions, making life easier for the bridal party. We wanted to make sure everything ran smoothly so the happy couple could enjoy their special day. 

The wedding meal was created to be inclusive for the varied dietary needs of the guests. The couple had picked out certain items on the menu for starters and mains. It was important to the couple to allow their guests a variety of choices, and they were chuffed with the last minute flexibility on the day and the food quality.

“We really appreciate that the Old Red Lion team accepted us doing something different, letting our celebrant perform an unofficial ceremony on the terrace, letting us hold a silent disco – which we organised a week before – and just generally being on hand throughout the night. Some of our guests even said it was the best wedding they’d ever been to – and we have to agree!” – Helen and Chris, the happy couple.
